Collaboration is a top priority for team leaders – and rightfully so. Research suggests that companies are more productive and profitable when their employees help one another. We also experience higher morale and job satisfaction when we enjoy collaborating with others.

As a culture designer and teamwork consultant, I've witnessed the benefits of collaboration firsthand for nearly two decades. I've also observed how achievable it is. However, many leaders often get it wrong. They prioritize breaking down silos or promoting a collaborative vision instead of addressing the root cause – our flawed relationship with asking for help.

Yes, some people resist collaborating with other teams or colleagues due to self-interest or mediocrity. However, most don't have malicious intent; they're simply afraid to admit they need help – or to ask for it.
